Trading Sketch Cards: An Unexpected Journey Edition

I'm all a-tingle in anticipation for the release of "The Hobbit" on December 14. So a-tingle, in fact, that Bilbo fell onto a sketch card. For Hobbiton!

Cheers!

Trading Sketch Cards: Space Tentacle Edition

Another sketch card inspired by the impending release of Ridley Scott's Prometheus which I did prior to its opening. I thought it'd be a good time for it now as the film has been released to video as of yesterday. Sure it has plot-holes and questionable scientific practices abound but it was a really groovy movie in my opinion and I'll probably be picking up the Blu-Ray version soon. In the meantime, Space Tentacle!

Cheers!

Trading Sketch Cards: Swimsuit Edition

Drawing at the beach isn't all it's cracked up to be. Intrusive sand finding its way to the most improbable places, ill-timed gusts of wind blowing your stuff around, spazzy kids running from every direction slinging juice boxes and water indiscriminately, as though they were care-free or something. Somehow I managed to not smear sunscreen all over the paper in all the commotion.

I persevere.

Cheers!

Trading Sketch Cards: Whistling Banjo Pig Edition

Illustrators Guy Francis and Stacy Curtis have a fun blog called "Dueling Banjo Pigs!" that I find strangely fascinating. I even contributed one to their blog once myself, and it's a subject that I occasionally come back to.

Cheers!

Trading Sketch Cards

Happy Friday the 13th to y'all. I managed to fix some of my blog so it doesn't look like a sad, abandoned blog, at least. Also, over the past few weeks I've been doing some artist sketch card trading cards. They're roughly 3.5x2.5 (trading card size!) ink on bristol. Some I've colored but most are just black and white. I'll be carrying these around with me to trade with artist friends, but they're for sale as well. Interested peeps need only drop me a line to inquire. I'll be posting one every few days, so check back for more inky nonsense.

Cheers!

Black and white background

A black and white background for a character design set I'm working on.

In other news, Michael Jantze will be teaching a New Media Master Class at the Charles M. Schulz Museum on January 8, 2011. Michael knows a few things about new media, having been at the forefront since early in his syndicated comic strip career. Look to the Charles M. Schulz Museum's website for details.

Happy 2011!

Good luck,

When the Elephants Come to Town

Our local alternative paper, City Pages, published its second (now annual) Comix Issue where they ask local artists to submit cartoons based on a common theme. The Republicans are holding their national convention in St. Paul, Minnesota this year, so naturally that ended up being the theme this time 'round.

I'd missed out on last year's issue, so I was looking forward to trying my hand at this year's. The question was, what to do? How to stand out? I had a feeling that for the most part the cartoons would be angry, vindictive affairs (as would be expected in an alternative publication, especially cartoons dealing with the RNC's national convention coming to one of the bluer parts of Minnesota) and frankly, it just seemed to easy to rant, boil, and foam, or to make the typical parodies. As a result, I didn't come up with an idea until a day before the deadline. And to my delight, it was among those chosen, although it only made it online, and you can click the strip below to see it.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that it didn't make it to the print version, but I am happy with the strip, and I think I prefer it this way rather than had I gone the ugly boiling rant route and been in the print version. Not that I think that would've secured a print-version spot, as there are a couple cartoons that aren't all angry and ugly that did make it into print, such as Steven Stwalley's "Pink Elephants on Parade" and Carl Nelson's "GOPzilla" - both are well-drawn and funny, or at least to me, and refreshing compared to the typical crap like "Welcome Evangelicals" and "RNC Sneak Preview". I'm not going to link those last ones - if you want to see them, find 'em yourself. Bleh.

So if you get a chance, check out the strip. Oh, and let me know if you catch the metaphor.

Good luck,

K

Novelty Sales

These two hapless salesmen aren't having much luck selling their overly-large novelty items. Who wants to lug around one large tradeshow piece of junk when you can fill up your bag with hundreds of reasonably sized pieces of junk?

Quick little test

Here's a quick little test that came out of the airplane illustrations posted earlier. This was going to be just the beginning of some other cool things, but sometimes corporate-think begins to crop up and cool things die on the vine. Nonetheless, it makes for some cool drawings and an animated tidbit.

It's Thursday, and since Thursday makes me think of dinosaurs, and since dinosaurs have nothing to do with the beginning of this post:

...another bit of inking fun,

and a phone doodle!

Yes, I am a closet "Alien" geek. Well, maybe I'm not that big of a geek- I mean, I don't go to online forums and argue the fine points of the alien's societal structure or courting rituals, or why barometric pressure would have an effect one way or another on an alien's ability to track prey in an atmosphere of methane. I mean, it's obvious what kind of disastrous results you'd end up with. Isn't it?

And the Predator? Pphfft. Predator is a pansy.

Good Luck,

Inking with a brush (part II)

I'm really looking forward to doing some more stuff like this. I always feel good for some reason after inking things with a brush. There's something vaguely relaxing about the process.

First we have the cat.

I'm really not a cat person, if you can't tell. This is pretty much how I see all cats. "Yes, here I am, but don't touch me, unless I want food. Then you may touch me, until you can't, at which point I'll bite you."

Actually, there was one cat I really liked, (and no, it wasn't dead, you sick puppy) Well, NOW he's dead, but that's still not why I liked him so - he was our cat, Loopy, and he thought he was a dog. Best cat I've ever known. He grew up with our two Brittany Spaniels, Mickey and Belle. Belle is the only one left, and she's a pretty good dog, but now and then I really miss Mickey and Loopy. Once in a lifetime kind of pets.

Speaking of dead cats, here we have a cook that went with the cooks from a previous post. I remember not liking this one too much, but I think I've changed my mind. I do like this one. I embrace it as my own, because, well, it is.

I think it was because for the most part, I preferred the sheer joy of the leaping cook over this one. But I still like this one's line. Next, please!

Ah, now here we have some real dancing fools. You may just see this kind of thing again soon. With color. Whoa.

And that concludes today's exhibit. Thanks for coming, and please leave your glasses in the receptacles by the exit doors.

Good Luck,

K

Inking with a brush

Happy Monday!

Watched the Colts pound the Bears in the Superbowl last night. Actually, felt more like the Bears couldn't pull their act together when it mattered most, and all the Colts had to do was hold them at arm's length. Blah blah blah - what really matters after all is some family time, my wife's top-notch guacamole, and the commercials. My favorites being Doritos' "Live the Flavor", CareerBuilder's "Darts & Jungle, Inc", and Bud Light's "Fist Bump".

Here are a couple of jolly cooks that I did with brush and ink.

I wish I could go into how much I love inking with a brush or a good brush pen, but I'm pressed for time, so I'll wax eloquent about all that later. Thanks to all who have been leaving comments - I promise I'll take time to answer back in the near future.

By the way, it is -16ºF here in Minnetokna. But hey, at least it's a dry cold!

Good Luck, and hope you're warm wherever you are,

K
